Michaela Walsh from Swinford proved the star of the Tailteann Schools Interprovincial Championships in Santry when she broke not one but two record both of them her own.

First up was the hammer, where Walsh’s heave of 60.66m improved on the record of 59.92m she has set last year. In the shot, Walsh produced an even more spectacular result with her best of 16.38 adding over a metre to her winning effort of 15.06m last year.

On the track, Ciara Neville of Castletroy College in Limerick won both the 100m and 200m, both of them faster than previous records  although recorded by hand. Not sure how that works these days?

On a day of many girls’ records, Eimear Fitzpatrick of Our Lady’s Terenure ran away with the 1500m steeplechase winning in a time of 5:12.42. That was over five seconds faster than Alison Armstrong’s time of 5:18.86 from last year.  Last year, Molly Scott of Scoil Chonglais equalled Susan Smith’s record for the 80m hurdles of 11.30 secs. This year she lowered that record to 11. 14 secs.

Adding over two metres to the girls javelin record was Orlaith O’Brien  from Ursuline Waterford with a throw of  45.67 metres. There were also three records in the relays all set by Leinster and breaking records held by Leinster.   The Leinster girls’ 4x100m quartet of 47.07 secs improved on the time of 47.16 secs; the 4 x 100 boys  kncoked one-hundredth of a second off the previous best with a time of 42.67 secs and the boys’ 4 x 400m team ran 3:25.03 – 40 secs faster than they ran last year.

In the 300m hurdles, Niamh Malone ran 43.43  secs, which was comfortably under the  EYOF standard  of 43.50.

When it came to the racing, the boys’ 800m proved a thriller, with Kevin McGrath of St Pat’s Navan taking off  with a lap to go to win in 1:56.59. Second was Conor O’Driscoll of Carrigaline.  In the girls’ 1500m, Emma O’Brien of Dominican Wicklow attempted the same front running tactic that has worked for her in the past.  Behind her Laura Ward of Pres Carlow played a waiting game and, after the bell, slowly but surely narrowed the gap. She came home a worthy winner in 4:48.40, with O’Brien holding on for second. Overall Leinster came out on top.
