Schools: High jump record of 1.85 for Lecky at Ulster Championships

A national junior high jump record for Sommer Lecky of Strabane Academy proved the highlight at the Ulster Schools Track and Field championship  at the Antrim Forum.
Lecky soared over a personal best height of 1.85m for a clear victory. Earlier this year, she won the national indoor title with a leap of 1.81m and two weeks ago, she improved her PB to 1.82m in Belfast. All these heights are over the European U20 qualification mark of 1.79m and the European U23 mark of 1.80m. Lecky also won the long jump with 5.62m.
Janine Boyle of St Columba’s Stranorlar won both the senior 100m and 200m in times of 12.57 secs and 25.70 secs respectively. Aaron Sexton of Bangor Grammar dominate the inter boys’ sprints, winning the 100m in 10.94 secs and the 200m in 21.67 secs.
There were eye-catching performances in the pole vault, with Ellie McCarthy of Belfast HS winning the senior girl’s title with 3.50m. At inter level, Harriet Dougan of Belfast Royal Academy went over the bar at 3.15m, which should see her in contention at the All Irelands. In the inter hammer, Jade Williams of Bailieborough CS threw 55.59m.
A comfortably winner of the senior shot was James Kelly of Royal and Prior Raphoe with a 14.31m. In the senior boys’ javelin, Garth Crawford threw 59.64m for victory.
In other results, Alice Rodgers of Ballymena Academy won both the junior girls’ 100m and 200m in 12.80 secs and 25.95 secs respectively. Niamh McCorry beat her Loreto Cavan team mate Bevan McCaffrey to win the 75m hurdles in 11.97 secs.
Davicia Patterson of Hunterhouse Belfast comfortably won the inter girl’s 300m with a time of 39.18 secs. Niamh Carr of Loreto Coleraine took the 1500m title in 4:47.17; Rachel Brown of Ballymena Academy was second in 4:48.17. Winner of the inter 3000m in 10:28.47 was Mia McCalmont of Abbey VS in Donegal. Winning the inter 100m and the high jump was multi-eventer Anna McCauley of Methodist College.
Rebekah Nixon of Banbridge Academy won the senior 1500m and 3000m titles; Arlene Crossan of Loreto Letterkenny won the senior 400m hurdles in 62 secs.
Of the boys, Matt Smyth of Methodist College won the junior 800m in 2:08.26 holding off Cathal Farrelly of St Colman’s Newry who finished in 2:08.80. Sean McKinley of St Eunan’s Letterkenny won the 1500m in 4:26.25 with Joseph Haynes of Armagh Royal School second in 4:26.90. Jonathan Cochrane of Ballymena Academy won both the long jump and the triple jump.
Cormac O’Rourke of St Malachy’s Belfast won the senior 800m in 1:59.30, with Sean Corry of Omagh CBS second in 2:01.65. In the 1500m, Alex Boyd of Regent House was the winner in 4:10.68 with Corry second in 4:13.16. James Edgar of Friends Lisburn won the senior 1500m in 4:18.48 and the 5000m in 16:07.64. Winner the inter boys’ 400m hurdles in 59.50 secs was Tom Mullen of Holy Cross Strabane. Winning the inter long jump with 6.24m was Jai Benson of St Malachy’s.
