Gary Thornton and Regina Casey made it a Galway City Harriers double at a well-supported Tuam 5km. Matt Bidwell, also GCH, was second and first master and Zola Flynn of Calry second woman.

CIARA MAGEEAN of UCD ran 2:04.90  in an open 800m at the Glo Health Indoor League in Athlone on Saturday. In the men’s open 800m, Bohermeen junior Kevin McGrath came home first in 1:53.59; John Travers of Donore won the league 800m in 1:54.11. Winning the 60m hurdles in 8.65 secs was Catherine McManus of DCH.

IN THE USA, Clonliffe’s Dave Flynn clocked a time of 67 mins 4 secs at the Arizona R’n’R Half  Marathon.

HUNDREDS TURNED OUT for the Art O’Neill Challenge from  Dublin to Glenmalure. Conditions were the most challenging conditions yet, with knee high snow in places. Winner was  Liam Vines the current Irish long distance champion, led from the start and by the first checkpoint had built up a lead of eight minutes on Paul Tierney.  He finished in 5 hrs 51 mins 35 secs, with Tierney improving as the race went along and finishing second in 6:06.20. First woman was Suzanne Kenny ninth overall in 6:45. 21.

Vines, an ex- GAA footballer, made his off-road ultra debut at the Art O’Neill in 2013. Last May, he joined the select few to have complete the Wicklow Round, running with Laurence Colleran.

ORIENTEER COLM HILL and Kate Cronin  of Raheny Shamrock were the winners of  Sunday’s Howth Hill Run, which attracted a massive entry of over 200.  Great to see both back in action –  Colm is an Irish orienteering international who also runs with Donore, while Kate is a much-capped mountain runner, who has been on the injury list for a while.
