Round-up: Steeplechasers in Berlin. Two Wins for Freddy

Olympic steeplechasers Michelle Finn and Kerry O’Flaherty travelled to Berlin for Saturday’s ISTAF Meeting, where they finished seventh and ninth. Finn was first home of the pair in 9:47.51 with O’Flaherty timed a 10:10.57. Race winner was the gloriously named Celliphine Chepteek Chespol of Kenya, aged 18, who finished in 9:25.49.

Raheny’s Freddy Sittuk, who is racing himself fit for the Dublin Marathon, had two wins over the weekend. First was Saturday’s Seamie Weldon Memorial 5km, Ardee, which he won in 15 mins 29 secs. A day later, he was in Derry for the Waterside Half Marathon, where he ran along with Foyle Valley’s Scott Rankin for much of the race and then sprinted home to win in a creditable time of 67 mins 36 secs.

Raheny’s Mark Kirwan, also training for Dublin, came home first at The Lakes 10km in Blessington in 31 mins 14 secs. DSD’s Laura Shaughnessy was first woman in 35 mins 05 secs. Finishing 12th overall, fourth master and first M55 was Patrick O’Grady of Drogheda and District.

Liam Murray and Enda Bagnall, both Virginia TCC, battled it out in horrible conditions at Tri an Mhi inaugural sprint triathlon at Lough Lene near Collinstown on Saturday. When Murray emerged from the 750m lake swim, he had a two minute advantage over Bagnall who came to within a minute of his team mate on the 20km cycle. He kept up his efforts on the 5km run, but it was Murray who came home first by over a minute. Ellen Vitting from the host club,Tri An Mhi was a comfortable winner of the women’s race.
