Mark English ends season with 500m in Newcastle. Plus road/mountain results.

UCD’s Mark English was just beaten by Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha over 500m yesterday  at the Great North City Games in Newcastle – a warm-up event for the  Great North Run that took place this morning.

Rudisha’s time for the rIMG_3795arely-run distance  was 57.69 secs – the fastest time ever. English’s  time of 57.91  secs puts him second on the all-time list.

A LARGE NUMBER of Irish travelled to Newcastle for the Great North Run, with Drogheda’s Nuala Reilly taking pride of place. Reilly finished 2nd W60 in the race with a time of 99 mins 38 secs – just five seconds behind the age group winner. Leading the Irish home was Paul Nagle who finished 100th in 77 minutes.

BEST OF THE IRISH at the World Mountain Running Championships in Bulgaria were Laura Shaughnessy of DSD who finished 32nd in the women’s senior race and Brain McMahon of Clonliffe, 41st of the senior men. Winning the women’s title for  a sixth time since her first victory in 2006 was Andrea Mayr of Austria. Mayr was just home from the Rio Olympics where she competed in the marathon; she also ran the marathon at the London Olympics.

In the men’s race, a Ugandan who looked like winning the race was disqualified for getting a hand push from a junior team mate in the final 500m of the race. It gave victory to the American Joe Grey, competing at his ninth World Championships, with the USA also taking a first ever team victory  and beating Italy.
