Clonliffe’s Brian Gregan nailed down his World Championships place when winning the 400m with a of 45.48 secs at the Bonus-Track meet in Notwill, Switzerland. The qualifying time for the Worlds  is 45.50 secs.  Second was Swiss athlete Joel Burgender in 47.02; Brian Murphy of Crusaders was sixth in 48.79.

Michaela Walsh of Swinford AC improved on her own Irish junior record when she threw 63.01m to win the hammer at the Irish Life Health Junior Championships in Tullamore today.  Her throw puts her second in the rankings going into the European Junior Championships which start in Grossetto, Italy, on July 20. Walsh also won the shot with a 15.34m effort.

Ciara Neville  of  Emerald AC won the  junior 100m in 11.59 secs, while Jo Keane  of Ennis Track, aged only 16, took the 800m title in 2:16.46. Sharlene Mawdsley won the 400m Multi-eventer Elizabeth Moreland of Cushinstown won both the 100m hurdles and the long jump. Another in record breaking form was Sarah McKeever of DSD who won the junior women’s pole vault with 3.95m. At U23 level, Kevin Kelly  of St Coca’s won  a tactical 1500m in  4 mins 13.34 secs.  Winning the junior race in 3:53.91 was Leevale’s Charlie O’Donovan, with arch rival Darragh McElhinney, who has been struggling with injury,  failing to finish.  Another tactical race was the U23 800m won by Shane Fitzsimons in 1:54.91. Comfortable winner of the U23 400m was Trim’s Harry Purcell.

A thrilling junior men’s 100m saw David Murphy  just edging out Joseph Ojewumi of Tallaght, Cillin Greene and Mark Smyth of Raheny to win in 10.74 secs. Winning the U23 5000m was Raheny’s Eoin Strutt in 14:53.97.  Karl Fitzmaurice of Ennis Track was five seconds adrift for second.

KATE O’CONNOR  and Michael Bowler are both lying in fifth place after the opening day of the European Combined Events Cup League 2 in Monzon, Spain today.
O’Connor is on 3,219 points  with her high 1.75 high jump the highlight giving her 916 points. In the  hurdles, she ran 15.05 (835 pts), shot was 11.94 and 200m 25.84sec. In a close-fought competition, Amy McTeggart lies is 19th with 2,785 (16.03 secs, 1.69m, 9.72m, 26.85 secs). Sarah Connolly pulled out after the hurdles. Leading the rankings is Austra Skujyte of Lithuania with 3,346 points; she hit 16.08m in her specialist shot put. Still to come tomorrow are the long jump, O’Connor’s specialist javelin and 800m.
Bowler is on 3,768 points with his biggest scores coming from a 6.99 long jump (811 points) and 49.95 in the 400m (817). His other results were 100m 11.28 (799), shot 12.66 (670), high jump 1.92 (731)the long jump. Shane Aston lies 13th on 3,606 points – 11.53 (746), 6.99 (811), 11.67 (586), 1.92 (731),  51.84 (732). Rolus Olusa is 20th in 3,454 points – 11.20 (817),  6.71 (746), 11.29 (563), 1.77 (602), 51.96 (726).   Leading the table is Norway’s Martin Roe on 4.180 points  – Roe did 15.44  in the shot, 7.33 in the long jump and  10.79 in the 100m.  Still to come are the hurdles, discus,  pole vault, javelin and 1500m.

 

IAN GUIDEN of Clonliffe ran a superb personal best time of 14 mins 38 secs to win the Kilcock 5km last night. Guiden finished comfortably clear of Dunboyne’s Peter Somba in 15 mins 3 secs, with Cormac Kelly of St Abban’s a close third. Mark Kirwan in fourth place was leading Raheny Shamrock to a comfortable team victory. Rachael Smyth  of host club St Coca’s was first woman in 16 mins 37 secs. Clonem;s Kevin Mausnell and Gladys Ganiel O’Neill of North Belfast Harriers were the winners at the Ards Half Marathon which attracted over 700 finishers, also on Friday evening.

EMMA MITCHELL OF QUB won the women’s 5000m at the Sollentura GP in Sweden on Thursday June 29.  Her time of 16:05.61 saw her finish comfortably clear of the South African Stella Marais.  In a closely-fought 1500m, Paul Robinson of St Coca’s finished eighth in 3:40.70.
