Brilliant 3rd for Kate O’Connor at Euro Combined Events; Michael Bowler 5th

Kate O’Connor of St Gerard’s Dundalk has finished a brilliant third at the European Combined Events Team Championships 2nd League, in Monzon, Spain.

O’Connor, aged just 16, moved gradually through the field, lying fifth overnight and then moving into fourth after today’s long jump and javelin. Her javelin throw of 45 m was the third best of the day and a superb time of of 2:17. 30 in the 800m moved her into third place by just ten points.
It also brought her a personal best score of 5,632 which is just marginally behind the Irish record of 5,669 set by Elizabeth Morland  of Cushinstown AC in the Canaries last month. That’s inside the qualifying marks for both the European Junior and U23 Championships  in the next few weeks and also for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. Finishing a fighting 16th was Amy McTeggart of Boyne AC.
At the top of the table, Lucia Slanickova of Slovakia did enough in the 800m to pass out longtime leader Austra Skujyte of Lithuania, with their scores at 5,816 and 5,784 points.

In the men’s competition Michael Bowler of Enniscorthy finished in fifth place on 7,032 points – a personal best and his first time over 7,000 points. Earlier in the day, Bowler had moved up to fourth thanks to a strong  run in the hurdles where he clocked 15.22 seconds – the joint fastest time of the competition.He dropped points in the discus, but held his own in the pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Falling back to his overnight position of 13th after the 1500m with a total of 6,564 points was Shane Aston of Trim AC; earlier he had thrown a season’s best 51.39m in the javelin. Finishing 19th was Rolus Olusa of Clonliffe Harriers, at 20 the youngest member of the men’s team. He ended up on 5,885 points.

AT THE BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS, Irish 60m and 200m indoor champion, Leon Reid, who is registered with Menapians and is eligible to compete for Northern Ireland,  clocked a personal best 20.38 secs to finish third in the 200m at  the British Championships.

AMY FOSTER  was in action at the Resisprint Meet in la Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland where she won the 200m  in 11.42 secs, helped by a just legal wind.  It was her second Commonwealth Games qualifying time. Adam McMullen  of Crusaders recorded 7.75m in  the long jump.
