Round-up: Freddy Sittuk wins Limerick Marathon. Fitzpatrick tops at Tallaght 5km (updated)

Freddy Keron Sittuk, back in his Raheny stronghold for the past fortnight,  had a comfortable victory in the Barrington Hospital Great Limerick Marathon today.

In the early stages of the race, Sittuk and last year’s winner Martin Doody from Limerick AC ran together with both given a time of 34 mins 55 for 10km. By the 20km mark, Doody had dropped back, but Peter  Mooney was keeping Sittuk in his sights and would do so until the end of  the race. Sittuk clocked 73:58  at the half-way mark, with Mooney just seven seconds behind.

By the finish, Sittuk had slightly increased his lead to win in 2:28.31; Mooney was second in 2:29.06 –  last year, he ran 2:31.27 and also finished second.. A distant third was Raivis Zakis of West Waterford in 2:38.18. First woman was Pauline Curley of Tullamore  Harriers, who had been second in 2916. She finished 13th overall in 2:52.15. A total of 727 finished the race.

Clonmel’s Kevin Maunsell  was a clear winner of the half marathon in 67:46,  ahead of  Ciaran Faherty in 68.30 and David Mansfield of Clonliffe Harriers. Jill Hodgins was first women in 78.15, with Youghal’s Aoife Cooke second and Olympic rower Sinead Jennings third.

Winner of the six-mile race was Meath-based Peter Somba, who is also back in Ireland for a few months. As he had done in 2016, he edged out Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu with both men given a gun time of 29 mins 39 secs.  Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane was first woman in 35:03. An estimated total a 6,881 adults competed across the four events; a few thousand also took part in the children’s runs a day earlier.

TOMAS FITZPATRICK and Laura McDonnell made it a host club double when they came home first at the annual Tallaght 5km. Fitzpatrick who has won this race ore than a few times, finished in 15:38, with Dylan Keegan of Templeogue AC second in  15:53. McDonnell was a clear winner of the women’s race in 18:15. Drogheda and District won both the men and women’s team categories – and the Louth county titles.
