Round-Up: O’Hanlon and Curley the class at 3/4 Marathon. Hehir, Mullen win Run with Catherina 10k

Gary O'Hanlon

Gary O’Hanlon

Gary O’Hanlon and Pauline Curley proved the class of the field at the new-look Irish 3/4 Marathon which had moved from its original location near Athlone to  a faster, flatter course at Longwood, Co Meath.

Clonliffe’s O’Hanlon, back in top form after a period of injury, finished almost 12 minutes clear of the field in 1hr 45 mins 54 secs. Second was Peter Mooney, while ten seconds behind Mooney for third place  was Paul Moran of Rathfarnham WSAF, who was also first M50.

Curley, the current Irish marathon champion, finished 15th overall in 2:06.33. That put her over 14 minutes ahead of Sandra Lynch,  with Donore’s Alma Hanevey third. Runners from local clubs were out in force – most notably the Waterstown  Warriors, a club  of regular runners who have affiliated to Athletics Ireland.  They were led home (we think) by Peter Lee who finished in 3:05.55.

There was also Lust for Life/Le Cheile/Esker Runners (all the same group?), Slieve Gullion Runners, Moate Athlone Running Group, Fit for Life Kilkenny/KCH, Edenderry AC, Balbriggan and District, Rathkenny AC, as well as members of well-established clubs like Donore, Clonliffe, Crusaders, Civil Service, Mullingar Harriers, and virtually every club in Co Meath. Looks like the team competition at the Dublin Marathon could be the toughest yet – especially if they introduce grades!

SEAN HEHIR OF Rathfarnham WSAF was a convincing winner of the Run with Catherina 10k in Cavan. In a show-down with Brandon Hargreaves of DSD, Hehir came out on top winning in 31 mins 32 secs. Hargreaves was almost half a minute behind for second, with Brian McCluskey of North East Runners over a minute behind again for third.

The race is named after the great Catherina McKiernan, and since it began three years ago in 2012, no other woman but Catherina has won it – until today. Appropriately, it was Catherina Mullen – named after McKiernan – who came out on top.  Winning the 5km race was Cian O’Reilly of  Annalee who had won the 10km both last year and the year before.  First woman was  teenager Kate McCrystal, also of Annalee.

PADDY HAMILTON and Laura Graham were the winners of the Armagh Adidas 10-mile. Wih a time of under the hour, Grahm is looking a likely medal winner at the Irish Marathon Championships in conjunction with the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon.

ON SATURDAY,  Maria McCambridge made a low-key return to racing at the Teachers BHAA Cross-Country in Castleknock College. Running in the open four mile along with a handful of women, McCambridge finished first woman in 24 mins 6 secs. Upfront, Eric Keogh out-sprinted his Donore clubmate Lee van Haeften to win the race in 21 mins 20 secs. Ide Nic Dhomhnaill won the women’s two-mile race.

Freddy Sittuk and Michelle Cox were the winners at the Donadea 10km.
