Round-Up: Gibbons, Shaughnessy win Ras UCD 5km; Kealy, Ryan Best at DCC/BHHA Races

IMG_0007To the sound of “Rith! Rith! Rith!” from the bi-lingual commentator, Myles Gibbons of Sliabh Bhuidhe Rovers in Ferns was a clear winner of the Ras UCD 5km held around Belfield – one of the few roads races in the country conducted  “as Gaeilge”.

Gibbons’ time of 16 mins 34 secs gave him a comfortable margin over Paul Lynch who finished second in 16:49  Third and first over 40 was Vincent McGuinness, with Ras regular Donal Hanratty finishing fourth.

UCD’s Laura Shaughnessy  was first home of the women in 19 mins 16 secs, with UCD students Roisin Neary and Claire Tonry second and third. Among the other finishers were ex-Irish international Rose Lambe and her son  Lorcan, who is studying for a masters in UCD. ANNETTE KEALY and Mark Ryan were the winners at the Dublin City Council BHAA Road Races in St Anne’s Park. Oldest finishers was the remarkable Brendan Earley, who began ru2014-04-05 13.40.09nning as a means of encouraging his children to get fit – and left them all standing many years ago!

AT PARKRUN Malahide, Daire Bermingham of Raheny was first home, with Sonia O’Sullivan and her daughter Sophie finishing first and second women.

IRISH SCHOOLS cross-country champion Andrew Coscoran of Star of the Sea won the final round of hill running’s Spring League round  in Mullaghmeen, near Oldcastle, Co Meath. Trim AC athletes were out in force; see pic; thanks Ciaran Tobin!
