World Masters Indoors: World Record for Lynch in 1500m. Fitzpatrick, McKiernan Win in Dunboyne

LIN_0935 On a great day for the Irish in Budapest, Brian Lynch of North East Runners broke the world record on his way to victory in the M60 1500m  at the World Masters Indoors today. He clocked a time of 4 mins 26.72 secs, beating Dutch runner Martinus van der Horne who finished more than a second behind in 4:28.15 – also inside the previous world record.  Joe Gough, who had won the 800m  on Friday, finished third with a tremendous  kick on the final lap.   There  was a bronze also for Derry’s Cathal McLoughlin M45 and Ann Woodlock of Donore Harriers in the W75. In total, the Irish team won 10 medals and took one world record – not a bad haul!

Taking gold were Joe Gough, M60 800m and Brian Lynch M60 1500m (WR); silver  went to Mick Traynor M45 cross-country  and Anne Woodlock W75 3000m; bronze  to Gough 1500m, Cathal McLoughlin M45 1500m, Woodlock W75 1500m, Mary Barrett W55 shot, Geraldine Finegan W45 pentathlon, and John McDermott M70 pentathlon. There were also fourth places for Mick Traynor in the M45 3000m, Mark O’Shea M40 1500m, and Maureen Glanton in the W45 discus, while Paul Cowhie was a close 5th in the M50 3000m and Brian O Domhnaill also 5th in the M35 3000m walk. TOMAS FITZPATRICK of Tallaght  put on a commanding display to win the Eirgrid Dunboyne ‘4’ in 18 mins 55 secs. Catherina McKiernan continued her recent winning streak when she finished first  of the women , with her time of 21 mins 22 secs putting her 20 seconds ahead of Sarah Mulligan from DSD. Donore Harriers took both men and women’s team titles.
