Britton and Hanrahan Take National 10km titles; plus round-up

LIN_5398Fionnuala Britton  of Kilcoole and Leevale’s Mark Hanrahan were the winners of the men and women’s titles at the Woodie’s DIY National 10km Championships held in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Britton’s time of 33 mins 54 secs  saw her finish comfortably clear of Catherina McKiernan  from Annalee, who lives beside the Phoenix Park and trains there every day. McKiernan was also first W40. In third place was DSD’s Sarah Mulligan.

In the men’s race, Mark Hanrahan of Leevale, who has returned from a winter’s training in Australia, held off the challenge of Raheny’s Mick Clohisey, the reigning national cross-country champion. Tomas Fitzpatrick, who has put in some good results on the roads recently finished third. Around 600 club athletes signed up for the race, held in conjunction with the Spar Great Ireland Run, which attracted around 5,000 starters.

ANNADALE’S Paul Pollock and Lifford’s Anne Marie McGlynn were the winners of the Titanic Quarter 10km in Belfast, leading home a record 1,800 finishers.  Pollock, who had set a PB at the World Half Marathon a week earlier, finished a comfortable winner in 30 mins 40 secs.  Joe McAllister of St Malachy’s was a distant second in 32 minutes. McGlynn finished 13th overall in 35 mins 18 secs, with her club mate Natasha Adams a good second in 36 mins 24 secs.

KEVIN Seaward of St Malachy’s broke 2 hrs 20 mins when he finished third at the Greater Manchester Marathon in 2 hrs 18 mins 46 secs.
