Gary and Freddy Win in Sodden Newry; Rathfarnham Wins WW Relay

Gary O'Hanlon

Gary O’Hanlon

Gary O’Hanlon, the Clonliffe running machine won the Newry  Marathon in a “respectable” time of 2 hrs 36 mins 15 secs. Freddy Keron Sittuk  had to battle for his half marathon win, with Stephen Duncan finishing just 15 seconds behind him. Finishing 10th overall and first woman was North Belfast’s Breege Connolly. Judging by the photographs, conditions were pretty awful – rain and more rain.

TWO MOSTLY Rathfarnham WSAF teams battled it out at the annual Wicklow Way Relay from Kilmashogue Woods to Shillelagh. The “real” Rathfarnham team finished first in 7  hrs 27 mins 36 secs; the TT Races (mostly Rath) were just over a minute behind in 7:28.38. Sli Cualann, anchored by veteran Mick Byrne, were third in 7:41.38 and Sportsworld fourth in 7:48.41.  Teams of eight included at least two women and two runners over 40. Tim O’Donoghue of East Cork improved his own best time for the “long” leg  7 to Tinahealy. He ran 74 mins 49 secs and was ten minutes faster than anyone else Unfortunately his team went astray at some point and finished unlucky 13th!

Also taking place was a solo run along the entire Wicklow Way from Marlay to Clonegal, with 29 starters. Don Hannon was first home in 14 hrs 46 mins 62 secs, with over four minutes to spare on Thomas Klimas. Donna McLoughlin set a new women’s best time for the course of 17 hours 1 min 10 secs – two hours quicker than she ran last year.

*Going back a few days: just two days after winning the Terenure 5-mile, Martin Fagan was 59 seconds clear of the field at the Bob Heffernan 5km in Enfield finishing in 14 mins 26 secs. This was his fourth road race since returning from a two-year ban for doping violations.  First woman was Donore veteran Barbara Cleary in a time of 16 mins 21 secs.

IAN GUIDEN and Louise Reilly made it a home double at the Clonliffe 2-mile in Santry last Thursday.

A HUGE ENTRY OF 654 turned out for last Thurday’s opening race in the  Ballycotton 5-Mile summer at Ballyandreen.  Winner was James Mc Carthy from the host club East Cork AC in 25 mins 20 secs; first woman was Midleton’s Karen Grant  in 31.13.
