Mid-Week: Ryan, Talty on Top in Dunboyne BHAA 5

Two of the best races on the Business Houses Athletic Association calendar took place on Tuesday – and both attracted record crowds. At the Dunboyne 5-Mile, a flood of late entries stretched the race organisers to their limit, but all ended well, with the usual huge spread of food, thoughtful prizes and plenty of time for chat on a typically enjoyable BHAA night.

Winner was Simon Ryan who finished in exactly 25 minutes. First woman was Aoife Talty, running her first race for some time. Also turning out was Hazel Murphy, another athlete returning after a long break.

At the John Buckley BHAA 5km in Cork, Mark Hanrahan won in 14 mins 34 secs – just two seconds outside the course record. Orla Drumm, representing UCC, was first woman. Close to a thousand lined out – and all got a 20% discount voucher for John Buckley Sports. That’s value!

PS:  BHAA races are organised by runners for runners  on an entirely voluntary basis – and to keep the show on the road, they need helpers at every single race. So if you are injured or sidelined, offer to lend a hand. Or if you run 10 or more races a year, sacrifice one  race to help out.  YOUR BHAA needs YOU!

AT THE CORK Graded League, David Cussen of Old Abbey won the high jump with a leap of 2.05; next up for Cussen is Saturday’s All Ireland Schools Championships. Race of the evening was the men’s 3000m, with James McCarthy winning in 8:38.30 – just .35 of a second ahead of his clubmate Tim O’Donoghue.

IMG_0007AISLINN CROSSEY of Newry AC warmed up for Saturday’s Aviva All-Ireland School  by clocking a time  of 56.72 secs for the 400m at the Dublin Graded Laegue  in Irishtown. Closest race of the day was the women’s mile, with Marie Hyland of Crusaders just holding off the fast-finishing Mauar Kearns of Donore and Ilona McElroy of Crusders another footstep behind. Kourosh Foroughi of Star of the Sea  threw 50.95m in the javelin and  clocked 52.66 secs in the 200m. DMP’s Marco Pons won the discus with  47.82.

DSD’s KILLIAN MOONEY  was a clear winner of hill running’s Leinster Evening League race last night at Glasnamullen in Co Wicklow.  Orienteer Eoin McCullough was second and Emma Hand first woman.  CNOC’s Ruth Lynam was first over 60 (and indeed over 50) beating Mary Hickey from Arklow – the only woman to have completed all the Dublin Marathons to date.

MARK ENGLISH OF UCD will make his  outdoor debut in the 800m at Saturday’s IFAM International Flanders Meet in Oordegem Belgium. A large Irish team includes Sarah Lavin who goes in the 100m hurdles; Thomas Barr, Jason Harvey, Timmy Crowe and Paul Byrne in the 400m hurdles, and men and women’s 4x100m teams. Barr opened his season last night with a time of 50.34 in Namur, Belgium – less than two tenths of a second off the Euro A standard.  UCD’s Ciara Everard  finished second in the 800m with 2:06.51, while Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper ran 23.60  secs in the 200m. A day later, Karl Griffin ran 1:59.74 for 800m in Belgium, with only 0.29 secs separating the top four finishers; he was 2nd.
