Round-Up: McCormack wins Brussels Lotto Cross. Meath titles for Rennicks and Treacy

1278242_G08_W01Fionnuala McCormack followed up her fourth place at the European Cross-Country by winning Iris Lotto CrossCup in Brussels yesterday. It was a first win for McCormack in  a race where in the past three years she has finished second (2012) and third twice (2013 and 2014). The Kilcoole athlete finished seven seconds ahead of  Dutch athlete Maureen Koster with Derartu Debela Delesa  of Ethiopia third.

DARRAGH RENNICKS  of Bohermeen  and Dunboyne’s and Sarah Treacy Dunboyne won the Meath senior cross-country titles in fine style on the lands of Ardbraccan House near Bohermeen. In ideal conditions – dry with a little wind – Rennicks was winning his sixth consecutive title. For Sara Treacy, who has qualified for the steeplechase at next summer’s Rio Olympics, it was a first title,  although her her first ever cross country race was in Bohermeen as a juvenile many years ago. Dunboyne made it a team double.

ERIC KEOGH and Niamh Stein were the winners of the Kildare Open 5km, a fundraiser for four north Kildare clubs affected by the recent collapse of  Precision Timing. In Newmarket, Mark Hanrahan of Leevale and Riocht’s Laura Crowe were the winners.

EDDIE GALLEN set a new Irish record of 134.814km when finishing second at the 12 Hores d’Atletisme de Corredors in Barcelona on Saturday December 19.  Gallen, who is 53 and lives in Spain, was breaking the 2014 record of 131kms set by Grellan McGrath  in Belfast.  In the 24 hour race, Susan McCarthy clocked up a total of 165.013 km. Tim Brownlie covered 120.368 and Brian Ankers 73.096km.
