Mary Cullen of North Sligo set a new women’s course record of 15 mins 45 secs when finishing first woman and fourth overall at the Finn Valley Stephen’s Day 5km in Stranorlar, Co Donegal.
Leading home the 600-odd finishers was Kilkenny’s Thomas Hayes in 15 mins 9 secs. David Scanlon of Rathfarnham WSAF was second and Derry’s Greg Roberts third. Second woman was Teresa Doherty of Finn Valley in 16 mins 52 secs.
RAHENY’S MICK CLOHISEY was out on his own at the Fields of Athenry 10k in Co Galway, with his time of 30 mins 3 seconds putting him over a minute clear of second placed Brandon Hargreaves of DSD. Making it a Dublin club double was the steadily improving Marie Hyland of Crusaders who was first woman in 36 mins 36 secs.
BRIAN MAHER of Kilkenny held off the challenge of local athlete Kevin Maunsell and Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe to win the annual Clonmel 4-mile in a time of 19 mins 3 secs. Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane was first woman in 22 mins 14 secs.
FOR A SECOND YEAR, Paul Pollock led home over a thousand finishers at the Greencastle 5-mile, but no record this year. Anne Marie McGlynn of Finn Valley was first woman in a new course record time of 27 mins 58 secs.
AT THE STREETS OF WICKLOW 5Km, Tomas Fitzpatrick of Tallaght beat DSD’s Killian Mooney to win the men’s race in 15 mins 26 secs, with Deirdre Byrne of Sli Cualann first woman ahead of DSD’s Sarah Mulligan. The Hogan clan, led by Tom and Deena, finished first family.
IN KERRY, Mark Hanrahan and Laura Crowe were comfortable winners of the Farranfore 5-Mile. Hanrahan’s time of 14 mins 38 secs put him almost a minute clear of East Cork’s Sean McGrath, while Crowe finished 11th overall in 16 mins 26 secs , well clear of the chasers led by Leevale’s Carol Finn.
