Round-Up: New Mile Record for Mageean at Millrose Games (updated)

Ciara Mageean of UCD set a new Irish indoor record of 4:28.40 when finishing sixth in the women’s Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York’s Armory. Shannon Rowberry was the winner in 4:24.39. On a good day for the Irish, John Travers of Donore ran a personal best 3:58:10 to finish sixth in the Amory Invitational Mile. Traver’s previous best was 3:59.62 run in New York last year. Race winner was Johnny Gregorek in 3:56.57. John Coghlan of MSB was 11th in 4:12.75.

In Scotland, UCD’s Mark English LIN_6894finished a close second  to Poland’s Adam Kszczot in the 800m at the Glasgow Indoor International.  Kszczot finished in 1:46.23; English ran 1:46.99.

In the men’s 60m hurdles, Gerard O’Donnell of Carrick-on-Shannon finished 7th in 8.04 secs. Winner was China’s Wenjun Xie in 7.68.

FIONNUALA McCORMACK finished second overall in the Wicklow Hospice Half Marathon on a hilly course  around Avondale and Rathdrum. Her time of  80 mins 41 secs put her 40 seconds behind the overall winner Scott McCann. On a good day for the McCormacks,  Fionnuala’s husband, Alan, won the 10km race in  34 mins 39 secs.

SARAH Mulligan made a welcome return to racing when she won the women’s 2-mile at the Aer Lingus BHAA races in the Alsaa by over a minute. Mulligan’s last appearance was at the Dublin Marathon.  Brian McMahon won the open men’s 5-mile by an even larger margin.

SHALENE McMURRAY of Newcastle and District and City of Derry’s Aaron Doherty were the winners of a well supported Ulster and NI Cross-Country Championships in Lurgan Park, with almost 400 athletes in action. Just about every NI club was represented, with 30 teams in the women’s race alone, among them five from Acorns AC and four from both Ballydrain and North Down.

UCD’s man  won the annual Colours Cross-Country against Trinity College hosted by Trinity in the Phoenix Park.  Tom O’Keeffe and Jonathan O’Donoghue broke away  with two laps to go  finishing first and second. With Karl Fitzmaurice and Colm Moran not too far behind,  UCD took victory by a single point. In the women’s race, UCD’s Laura Cullen finished third while Anna O’Sullivan finished in a sprint after taking a tumble on the last lap.
