Clohisey’s 2:15.11 puts him second on Rio ’16 list (updated)

IMG_9881Raheny’s Mick Clohisey finished tenth in this morning’s Seville Marathon with his time of 2:15. 11 moving him into second on the list for Rio ’16.

It’s very tight – Kevin Seaward on 2:14.52 tops the list followed by Clohisey 2:15.11, Sergiu Ciobanu 2:15.15 and Paul Pollock 2:15.39. So just 47 secs separate the top four men’s qualifiers. Pollock runs in London, where originally Seaward was to pace him  to 30km; that plan is now ditched. Clohisey ran 2:15.35 in Berlin last September, with Pollock on his heels. Also running London is Stephen Scullion.

Clohisey’s splits show that he run an average of about 3 mins 15 secs pace per kilometres. He went through 10km in 31.47 and halfway in 66.50. After making halfway, he speeded up to 3:02 pace, but from 35-40km, slowed to 3:21 pace.

Pollock was in action this morning winning the Woking Half Marathon in 63.46 despite difficult blustery conditions. The time qualifies him for the World Half Marathon in Cardiff.

As for the women, Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers who ran 2:38.53 and  Clonliffe’s Barbara Sanchez with 2:39.49 added themselves to the list of qualifiers this morning. Three men and three women will make the  team for Rio. Lizzie Lee and Fionnuala McCormack (who had a jog around the Wicklow Hospice “Half” yesterday)  top the list, with  Breege Connolly of NBH, who ran 2:37.29 in London last year, in third place. DSD’s Maria McCambridge, who had hoped to run in Seville, is now penciled in for an early April marathon.

MOLLY SCOTT of St LOT hurdled 8.57 and then 8.52 to go inside Elizabeth Morland’s 8.55 Irish Youths record at the Munster Championships in Nenagh.
