Colin Costello of Star of the Sea won a high-quality Bob Heffernan 5km in Enfield. His time of 15 mins 5 secs put him 11 seconds clear of second placed Vinny Costello from Mullingar, First woman was Mary Hanley of the host club Na Fianna.
* Very glad to report that contrary to previous info, around 400 turned out for the race; big thanks Rory Mooney for the info. Still, the message is clear: support your local (running) club races and avoid events that are unlicensed and put nothing back into our great sport.
* Big crowds of 450 at Mullingar 5km League; almost 50-50 men and women. Women’s groups from all the big Dublin clubs turned out for the final Meet & Train Summer League race over four miles in the Phoenix Park. Louise Kiernan of Clonliffe was the winner.
* Phoenix Park was also the venue for the Dublin Staff Relay – a 5 x 5km race for businesses (nothing to do with the Business House Athletic Association by the way). Leading home the 457 teams was Athlone Institue of Technology in 1 hrs 14 mins 28 secs, followed by Wheatfield Prison 1:15.25 and Certus 1:17.15.
