Ciobanu, McCambridge Win Terenure 5; plus news round-up

Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu was the class of the field at the 29th Terenure 5-Mile,  winniLIN_9503ng  by some margin from his Clonliffe team mate Gary O’Hanlon in a time of 24 mins 37 secs. In third place was Thomas Hayes from Kilkenny while after him came a group led by Pat McCartan of West Limerick who outsprinted Raheny pair  Bernard Roe and Cillian O’Leary for fourth. Phil Kilgannon, in seventh place, was first home for  host club, Sportsworld.

First veteran over 35 was last year’s winner Paul Fleming of Rathfarnham WSAF followed closely by Mick Traynor of Raheny first M45 and Shane O’Neill of Rathfarnham WSAF, first M40.

The women’s raLIN_9556ce was dominated by Maria McCambridge, still aiming to qualify for the World Championships later this summer. That’s despite dropping out of the Rotterdam Marathon  last month thanks to a combination of  hot weather and suspect nutrition.

McCambridge, now firmly back in the DSD camp after a few years in Letterkenny, will pull on her spikes and run the 5000m at the European Clubs Track and Field Championships next weekend. “I’m hoping it will be a tactical race!” she says. Her target  in Terenure was 27 minutes and she was just over that, so happy enough. Second woman was Orla Drumm of Crusaders, while third was DSD’s Sarah Mulligan. Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com

* Brian Maher of Kilkenny breezed to an easy win at the Stoneyford 10km with his time of 32.14 putting him over two minutes ahead of the pack. Martina O’Dwyer of Carrick-on-Suir was first woman.

* David Campbell  of UCD made a successful return to racing when he won the  Maynooth 10km by a considerable margin. Campbell, a physiotherapy student, has battled injury over the past three years, but hopes to compete on the track later in the season. Finishing second was UCD Athletics Club coach  James Nolan, now a veteran, who made a late decision to run.  In sixth place was 1997 UCD scholarship student John O’Reilly. First woman was Aoife Lynch. Over 700 finished the race which did not have an Athletics Ireland permit.

* Alan O’Shea of Bantry and Leevale’s Lizzie Lee, who was eighth overall, won the Emer Casey Memorial 10km in Youghal. Lee’s time of 35 10 was the fastest women’s 10km time of the weekend, although she was closely followed by Lifford’s Anne Marie McGlynn who ran a personal best 35.51 at the Killyclogher 10km near Omagh.

* Michael Mulhare of Portlaoise won a quality 3000m at the special meet held to launch the new Danny McDaid track in Letterkenny.  Mulhare’s time of 8:18.92 put him ahead of John Travers (Donore) , Gary Thornton (GCH) and Mark Kenneally  of  Clonliffe. An attempt at producing the first sub-4 minute mile in Donegal  agonisingly fell short when Sawe Jonathan Kiplimo of Kenya crossed the line in  4:02.16. Best of the Irish was Derry’s Conor Bradley  who just pipped Eoin Everard and finished in 4:04.22.  Fionnuala Britton ran in a mixed 3000m, breaking nine minutes, while Laura Crowe of Riocht ran 2:04.30 to win the 800m.

* Abroad, Paul Robinson ran 3:37.99 for 1500m in Eagle Rock California – the fastest 1500m by and Irishman this season so far.  At the BMC in Solihull, Rose Ann Galligan ran 2:04.08 for 800m., High jumper Deirdre Ryan of DSD has opened her season with a 1.72 in Sinn, while at the Loughborough 2-Day meet, Kerry Harty of Newcastle won the steeplechase in 10 mins 6 secs – and featured in a hilarious video by the Eight Lane guys. At the same meet, Rose-Anne Galligan was second in the 800m in a season leading time of 2:03.19 while Claire Fitzgerald threw 47.48 in the discus. Last season, Fitzgerald threw  51.22 putting her third on the all-time list behind Patricia Walsh and Marita Walton.

* At the Meath Track and Field Championships, Robbie Matthews of Dunshaughlin stretched his recent winning streak by winning the senior men’s 3000m. beating Lorcan Campion, who was leading Dunboyne to team victory.
