Gregan Wins in Sweden; Lynch runs 10.66 for 100m

Defying the windy conditions, Clonliffe’s Brian Gregan ran 45.65 secs to win the 400m in Goteborg, Sweden. His time was close to the personal best 45.53 he ran earlier this week in Spain.  In the women’s 1500m,  Claire Tarplee  of DSD knocked almost two seconds off her previous best when finishing third in  4:11.35 – the fastest  Irish time so far this season.  Riocht’s Laura Crowe, who ran 4:12.25 in Manchester a few weeks ago,  was seventh in 4:16.64.

* Some very interesting results from the Ulster Championships at the Antrim Forum. Jason Smyth won a preliminary 100m in 10.81, beating Craig  Lynch, but Lynch went on to better that time with a sizzling 10.66 in the final into a -2.0 wind ( I hope I’m reading this correctly).  Last week in Florida, Smyth ran a wind-assisted 10.24; Lynch ran 10.89 in Oordegem on June 1.  Amy Foster won the women’s 100m in  11.88.

* Siofra Cleirigh Buttner  of DSD  ran 2:05.27 to win the English Athletics U20 800m title at Bedford. The time was not far off the 2:03 she ran to win the senior girls’ 800m at the All-Ireland Schools T-F in Tullamore last month.

* Colin Costello of Star of the Sea led home 476 finishers at the Braveheart Trail 5km along the banks of the river Boyne in Trim. A cLIN_0688lose second was Kevin Baker, with Rory Kavanagh third. Mary Hanley of Na Fianna was first woman.

*Winner of the Tulfarris  “Tough” 10-mile in 56 mins 15 secs was Declan Power. Anna Bushe was first woman in 72 mins 17 secs.  Special well done to father and daughter  Martin and Catherine O’Rourke of Tinehely Tri Club who finished almost together in just over 93 minutes.  Pics at Outfront Facebook page; or at www.actionphotography.ie

* A total of 115 turned out for the inaugural Parkrun 5km in Griffeen Park, Lucan, where Karl Fitzgerald had the honour of bringing them home. Second was Matt Shields of North Belfast Harriers, the man behind Parkrun in Ireland; it was his 77th Parkrun.  Scottish visitor Hannah Oldroyd was first woman. Familiar names lining out included BHAA  regulars Ian Redican, Frank McNally and Kevin Donoghue, all home in the top 21.  Best represented clubs were Lucan Harriers and Le Cheile.

* Raheny Shamrock clubmates  Ian Conroy and Kate Cronin won mountain running’s European Championships trial race at Crone Woods  in Co Wicklow.  Of the men, Colm Mullen was second and Des Kennedy third on the 7.3km course that finished on the top of Djouce.

* In Portumna Forest Park, Vasily Neumerzhitskiy (Clonmel, M40) won the 100km in a very respectable time of  7:51.38.  Raheny’s Rory Mooney won the 50km. The races were held on a “loop” around  the woods.

*Biggest running-based event over the weekend was the Hell and Back mudfest run from Kilruddery Estate to the Sugar Loaf and back, which attracted well over 1,500 starters. First home was Jason Kehoe  58 mins 59 secs.
