Round-up: Coghlan and Crowley win New Year’s Day 5k

IMG_0009John Coghlan   of MSB and Caroline Crowley of Crusaders were the winners of the Tom Brennan New Year’s Day 5km held in  Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Coghlan, a many times previous winner of the race, controlled the race up from from the start, finishing in 15 mins 16 secs, which was enough to hold off Ben Branagh of St Malachy’s, who was just two seconds adrift. Third was Raheny’s Daire Bermingham while fourth and first junior was Cathal Doyle of Clonliffe.

Crowley, whose new coach is Catherina McKiernan, was an even more emphatic winner of the women’s race in 16 mins 43 secs. A fighting second was Ciara Hickey of Brothers Pearse running her first race since recovering from a stress fracture and coming home ahead of Rachael Smyth of St Coca’s.

By a miracle, the forecast storm Gertrude (I think?)  held off until most of the field was home. Interestingly, the races attracted more women than men, probably because of the large teams from the Lord Mayor’s 5-Alive Challenge and the Waterstown Warriors fun running group as well as a few commercial groups.

IN WESTPORT,  Declan Fahy won the Resolution Run 5km in 16.387, beating local lad Joe Hastings currently running with UCD. In the women’s race, Mayo’s Colette Tuohy was first home ahead of  Kilkenny junior Aoibhe Richardson, who in turn had over half a minute to spare on her mother Niamh, who is a Westport native.

MARK MCKINSTRY and Shileen O’Kane were the winners of the 20th Race over the Glens in Glenarriff Park, Co Antrim.  In this six mile (ish) race, the runners head down a road and then face a climb into the glens until they reach a lone piper. They then turn back for home. Sounds magic!

AISLING CARROLL  of Fingallians won the Meet and Train Winter League race  hosted by Sportsworld and held over two miles in a soggy Bushy Park, Dublin. Carroll caught early leader Laura Buckley of Dunboyne on the second of two legs. Teams from Crusaders, Donore, Clonliffe Harriers, Blackrock, Dunboyne, Trim, Brothers Pearse and Tallaght took part in the race, with the third round pencilled in for January 24.
