World Masters: Second gold for Carmel Parnell; Traynor 3rd

2062964365_536e7307c7_zCarmel Parnell has won a second gold at the World Masters in Lyon – this time it’s in the W60 10,000m. Parnell’s time of 40:29.86 gave her over a minute and a half to spare on the second placed Dominique Combes of France who finished in 42:16.59.  Mick Traynor of Raheny, who like Parnell had started his campaign in Lyon with victory in the 8km cross-country, had to be content with  third place in the M50 race. His time of 33:23.95  put him just 31 seconds behind the winner Francis Fortenada of Spain.

In the W40 age group, Cathy McCourt finished fourth in 39:15.28, while Jacqueline McMonagle was seventh W45 in 41:00.42. Barry Minnock competing in the M40 age group was forced to drop out.

W40: 4 Cathy McCourt  (Nth Belfast Hrs) 39:15.28. W45: 7 Jacqueline McMonagle(Derry Spartans)  41:00.42. W60: 1 Carmel Parnell (Leevale)  40:29.86, 2 Dominique Comber (Fra) 42:16.59.

Long hurdles prelims – M35 400m H: 12 Ger Cemin 59.16.  M70 300m H: 4 John MacDermott 54.18 (q)

10,000m walk – W40: 15 Maggie O’Connor 59:16.00. W45: 32 Brid Hennessy 58.31, 32 Ann Gormley 71.07, 36 Verena Fenlon 79.31. Team – 4th.

Tuesday August 11

Long hurdles  finals –  M70 300m H: 4 John MacDermott 53.40.
