Pat Moore collected another medal for Ireland when he finished third in the M65 javelin at the World Masters in Lyon today with a throw of 43.75. In yesterday’s preliminary rounds, he threw 41.56m. Winner was Esa Kiuru of Finland with 50.95m.
Just two days after winning 800m gold, West Waterford’s Joe Gough was lining out in the 1500m heats. Gough went in the fourth of five M60 heats and in a tactical race, secured the win and his place in the next round with a time of 4:53.65. It was the slowest heat of the round; in the fifth heat, Spain’s Daniel Gonzales came home first in 4:42.81 with four qualifying from this heat. The opening heat also produced a fast time and four qualifiers; winner was Alan Gower of Australia in 4:46.51.
In the M40 heats, Rathfarnham’s Paul Fleming came through with a time of 4:10.28 for third place in the first heat. Also qualifying was Laurence Arthur who ran 4:10.35 to finish fifth in heat 4. Also through are Maria McCarthy of Farranfore W40 and Midleton’s Joan Hough W55.
Ireland currently lies 12th on medals table; in all 58 countries have won at least one medal.
The Irish teams has won 21 medals so far – 7 gold, 5 silver, 9 bronze.
