World Masters: Another steeplechase medal – this time for McEvilly. Plus full result

IMG_8094On the final day of competition at the World Masters in Lyon, Galway’s Martin McEvilly was pipped for gold in the M65 2000m steeplechase.  Winner was  Belgium’s Johny Boextaens in 7:42.01; McEvilly was just fractionally behind.

With a total of 26 medals – eight gold, eight silver and ten bronze –  Ireland ended up 23rd on the medals table;  65 countries won at least one medal.  Star of the team was Leevale’s  double world champion Carmel Parnell, winner of the W60  8km cross- country and the 10,000m and second in the 5000m. Other  Irish world champions are Kelly Neely W35 800m, Joe Gough M60 800m, Mick Traynor M50 cross-country and Hugh Gallagher M90 hammer, weight throw and throws pentathlon; Hugh was also fifth in the javelin and sixth in the shot.

Malaga was selected as the venue for the 2018 Games, which will take place in September of that year – good news for those who don’t like it hot.  For the first time, out-of-season dope testing will take place before those games.
