Weightman breaks nine minutes in Armagh International, McElhinney wins at Munster Schools

Laura Weightman of Morpeth Harriers proved the star of tonight’s Brooks Armagh Roads Races running a fast time of 8 mins 59 seconds to win the women’s race.  Best of the Irish was Kerry O’Flaherty who finished ninth in 9 mins 22 secs, a day after making the European Indoors qualifying mark for 1500 in Athlone.

The men’s race produced a thrilling finish with Ben Connor  winning by a thread from Brandon Doughty; the pair were given the same time of 13 mins 55 secs. A close third was Dewi Griffiths of Swansea Harriers. Best of the Irish was Shane Quinn 10th in 14 mins 10 secs. Dozens of British club athletes had travelled over for the races, as had a number of orienteers, who are  in Armagh for a three-day festival of the sport starting tomorrow.

DARRAGH MCELHINNEY  of Colaiste Pobail, Bheanntrai was a comfortable winner of the boys’ inter race at the Munster Schools Cross-Country in Cork today, beating Jake McCarthy of Pobailscoil na Trionoide, Youghal. In the inter girls race, Loreto Fermoy’s Laura Hayes beat Tamzin Muldowney of St Mary’s Midleton. Senior winners were Fearghal Curtin  of Midleton CBS and Stephanie Cotter of Coachford College.
