The Irish women’s team, led by Sarah McCormack in sixth place, have taken team bronze at the World Mountain Running Championships in Krynica, Poland.

McCormack, who is based in Scotland, ran a brilliant race to finish less than two minutes behind Italy’s Alice Gaggi.   Less than two minutes behind again was Raheny’s Kate Cronin in 18th place, with Sarah Mulligan of DSD 43 seconds behind in 27th place  and Sharon Trimble of North Belfast Harriers  in 52nd place making up the Irish team. Italy with, its four runners all inside the top 15, were comfortable winners of the gold medals ahead of Great Britain.

This has been a great year for Irish women’s mountain running; in July Sarah Mulligan became the first Irish woman  to win the grueling Snowdon International in Wales.

In the men’s race, Ugandan runners completely dominated, taking the top four places and beating Italy to the team title. Clonliffe’s Brian McMahon in 33rd place was best of the Irish; the team was 11th. Best of the Irish men in the junior race was Padraig Moran 34th; no junior Irish women ran.

Closer to home, Stephen Cunningham of Mourne Runners finished 7th in the Ben Nevis Mountain Race in Scotland in a time of 1 hrs 45 mins 35 secs. Jonny Steede of Ballymena, winner of the Wicklow Way Ultra last March, was 22nd despite going off course.

* In Rieti Italy, Laura Crowe of Riocht ran a brilliant personal best of 2:00.98 to finish sixth in the women’s 800m. Her time catapults her into fourth place on the all-time Irish list. Mark English of UCD had set his sights on the Irish record in the men’s 800m and he came very close for a second time this seasonwhen he finished fourth in 1.44.89 .  In July, English ran 1.44.84 at the Diamond League meeting in London; David Matthews’ Irish record stands at 1:44.82. Paul Robinson  of St Coca’s finished eighth in the men’s 1500m, setting a new Irish U23  record  in a personal best time of 3:35.22.  Kenya’s Silas Kiplagat  won the race in 3.30.13.

*Bantry’s Alan O’Shea  – an ex-mountain running international – won the John Buckley Cork Half Marathon in Blarney today  with his time of 66 mins 59 secs putting him almost two minutes clear of Philip Harty  from West Waterford) 68.52. In third place was former Irish marathon champion Cathal O’Connell of St Finbarr’s who was also first master and first M50.

Emma Murphy of host club St Finbarr’s won the women’s race ahead of  her clubmate Anne Marie Holland. Her winning time was 82 mins 9 secs.

* Local athlete Keith Shields of Foyle Valley outsprinted Declan Reed to win Waterside Half Marathon in Derry in 69 mins 45 secs, with Reed timed at 69:47. Pre-race favourite Stephen Scullion had pulled out of the race with a leg strain. Ann Marie McGlynn of Lifford was first woman  in 79 mins 27 secs.

*Darragh Rennicks  of the host club Bohermeem and Raheny’s Simon Ryan battled it out for victory in the Rennicks and Delaney Cups Bohermeen 5-Mile, with Rennicks making it to the line ahead of Ryan with three seconds to spare.

In an even closer battle for third place, Peter Mooney just edged out Dunboyne’s Rory Kavanagh. Just a point separated the top two teams with Dunboyne taking home the beautiful Rennicks Cup (a replica of the Sam Maguire)  from Bohermeen.

Lorraine Manning of Raheny was a clear winner of the women’s race from Sinead Lambe one of a car load of Donore athletes in action, with Jim McNamara and Ann Woodlock making it an over 65 double – and both of them over 70.
