Saturday Round-up: Sittuk, McCambridge win The Lakes 10km

Freddy Keron Sittuk was in Blessington this morning where he battled it out with Kilkenny’s Brian Maher  for victory in the annual Lakes 10km. In the end there was just two seconds in it, with Freddy getting there first. Over a minute behind in third place was Tommy Evans of Gowran.

In the women’s race, Maria McCambridge  had only herself to beat and came home in 34 mins 34 secs – over four minutes clear of the chasers.

* Paul Robinson of St Coca’s ran 1:46.1 to finish third in the Diamond League meeting in Brussels last night.  Both Mark English (1500m) and Rose Ann Galligan (1000m) are competing in Rieti, Italy tomorrow (Sun).

* We were deeply saddened this week to hear of  athlete Joe Reville’s tragic death after a climbing accident at Luggala. Joe, a member of Rathfarnham WSAF, came into his own when he entered the master classes, most memorably beating  the legendary Noel Carroll at an indoor  meet in Nenagh. His best results came indoors and in 2012, he won the M60 800m title,  again in Nenagh. Joe was a man of many talents – a much respected teacher in Terenure College and the Institute of Education, and author of several well-regarded textbooks on biology. Only a few weeks ago, Joe was running round the Phoenix Park at a local orienteering event. He was a scholar and a gentleman. To his wife Yvonne and his children Keira, Naomi and Kim goes our heartfelt sympathy.
