Schools: Mawdsley the star at Munster Schools. Records for Boyle at Ulster Schools

Sharlene Mawdsley, who currently tops the Irish 200m rankings, won both the senior 100m and 200m at the Glo Health Munster Schools Track and Field Championships in Waterford RSC.

Strong headwinds all day scuppered any chances of fast times, with Mawdsley, who was representing St Mary’s Newport, winning the 100m in 12.87 secs (-4.2 wind) and the 200m in 24.64 secs (-3.5 wind).

Winning the inter   girls’ 100m in 12.84 secs and the 200m in 25.26 secs – before anchoring Castletroy College to victory in the 4x100m relay was Ciara Neville of Castletroy College.  Taking both the inter boys’ 100m and 400m titles was Tony Odubute of Rice College Ennis. Odubute braved a spectacular -6.0 headwind in the 100m winning in 12.06 secs.

There were three  track records – Laura Nicholson of Bandon Grammar won the inter girls’ 1500m steeplechase in 5 mins 19.11 secs, while Darragh McElhinney of CP Bantry  was a clear winner of the boys’ U16 mile in 4:26.08. In the junior boys’s 4 x 100m, Mercy Mount Hawk were breaking a 36-year old record when they won the race in 47.10 secs.

Setting a new senior girls’ javelin record of 43.19m was Orlaith O’Brien of Yeats College Waterford; the previous best of 41.16m dated back to 1983.

In the junior throws, Ciara Sheehy of St Mary’s Charleville won the shot with a record putt of 13.04m, while Megan Lenihan of Hazelwood Drumcollogher won the discus with 42.97m – also a record. There was also a record for Ciara Kennelly of St Brigid’s Killarney who was a clear winner of the junior girls’ high jump when she soared over 1.65m.

Sophie Meredith of SMI Newcastle jumped 5.74m to win the inter long jump and also took the high jump title. Daniel Ryan of Thurles CBS, winner of the Somerset Schools U18 multi-event title earlier this month, jumped 6.97m for the senior long jump title. Sister Anne of Ursuline Thurles won the minor girls’ long jump with 5.09m and also won the junior pole vault with 2.40m.

Setting a senior boys pole vault record of 4.25m was Yuri Kanash of St Augustine’s Dungarvan. Emma Coffey of St Angela’s Cork set an inter girls’ pole vault record of 3.20m.  Improving the minor boys’ long jump to 5.88m was Louis Archer of Bandon Grammar.

AT THE ULSTER SCHOOLS T-F IN Belfast, Janine Boyle of St Columba’s set new records on her way to victory in the inter 100m and 200m  She clocked a time of 11.98 secs in the 100m and 24.97 secs for the 200, and also helped her school to relay victory.  In the inter boys’ 200m, Aaron Sexton of Bangor Grammar  ran a new record time of 22.12 secs.  Also in record breaking form was Brendan O’Donnell of St Eunan’s who threw a mighty 66.84m  to win the inter boys’ hammer.

At senior level, Christopher O’Donnell of Magh Ene Bundoran was another in record-breaking form, winning the 400m in 48.57 secs. One of the closest races of the day was the senior 1500m,where Fintan Stewrad of Lumen Christis Derry beat James Edgar of Friends Lisburn  with a time of 4:08.84; Edgar’s time was 4:09.64.

Out on her own in the senior girls’ 3000m was Clodagh O’Reilly of Loreto Cavan who won in an untroubled 10:47.67. She also won the 1500m in 4:47.35. Winning the senior girls’ 100m hurdles was Megan Marrs of Strathearn in 15.16. Arlene Crossan of Loreto Letterkenny won the 400m hurdles in 62.81 secs.
