Schools: Cross-Country Round-up – Leinster, Munster, Connacht

Senior boys – West Leinster

Fearghal Curtin, Darragh McElhinney and Stephanie Cotter,  who all  who ran in Cardiff  at last Sunday’s Celtic International, were  impressive winners at  the South Munster Schools Cross-Country Championships in Cork. For Stephanie Cotter, her victory in the senior girls’ race was a nice 18th birthday present.

Brian Fay of Belvedere ran a confident race to finish best of the senior boys at the West Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships on a bitterly cold day in the Phoenix Park. Daire Finn of St Declan’s Cabra was second and Alex Hunter of the King’s Hospital third. Belvedere took team gold ahead of Salesian Celbridge and the King’s Hospital.

Lauren Tinkler  of HFCS Rathcoole continues her rapid ascent in the world of athletics when she won the senior girls race. In the inter boys’ race, Cian May of Salesian Celbridge had a good win over Fathi Aden from Synge Street CBS who had led the race on the opening lap.  Molly Brown of Castleknock Community School  had a good win over Ashling Mohan of Mount Sackville in the inter girls’ race, with Castleknock finishing best of the teams. St Aidan’s finished best overall school at the North Leinsters in the Alsaa today, with Sean O’Leary winning the senior boys’ race   and leading the team to victory.  St Aidan’s also finished second in the minor, junior  and inter races. Lucy Barrett of Pobal Scoil Neasan  won the senior girls’ race with Alannah Cooley  of Dominica College Griffith Avenue second and Loreto Mullingar the team winners.

In the East Leinster zone, Sarah Healy  of HF Killiney won a cracking girls’ inter race,  chasing ahead of Amy Rose Farrell from Mount Anville and Wesley’s Abi Taylor of Wesley on  the grueling uphill  to the finish line at Avondale Park, Rathdrum.

Winner of the senior girls’ race was Sophie Murphy of Mount Anville. In second place, Jodie McCann was leading Institute of Education to team victory over Loreto St Stephen’s Green, who were led home by Amy Fay 4th. Mount Anville took two more individual titles with Ellen Cheung  best of the juniors and Eimear Mahek first minor.

In the senior boys’ race, James Maguire of St Benildus showed a welcome return to form, beating Conor Halpin of Blackrock for the title. Blackrock took the team title; Colaiste Eoin was the dominant school overall winning inter junior and minor team titles. Individual wins for the school came from Alex O Floinn in the junior race and Morgan Clarkson in the minor race, while Naoise O Bradaigh finished second behind Newpark’s Oisín Kelly in the inter race.

Over a thousand turned out for the South Connacht Championships in South Park, Claddagh, where Eanna O Cualain  of Col na Coiribe and Aoife King of Pres Headfort were the senior winners. Pres Athenry won five team titles – all four of the girls and one of the boys, as well as a second place. Good going.
