Round-Up: Wins for Gough and Barrett at Master Indoors (with results)

Niamh Fitzgerald (Lucan)

Joe Gough of West Waterford was a clear winner of the  M60 800m at the Woodie’s DIY National Masters Indoors in Athlone today, later taking the 400m. Mary Barrett of Loughrea W55  and Celbridge’s Kieron Stoute M45 proved the stars of the shot put, both setting age group records. Eoin Moylan of Crusaders won the M35 title.

Niamh Fitzgerald  of Lucan Harriers won the W35 800m. Before motherhood intervened, Niamh (Beirne) had a distinguished junior career, earning her a US scholarship. Now 39, she represented Ireland at the 1999 World Cross-Country Championships and ran 2:05 for 800m, among other achievements. Pauline Curley of Tullamore  Harriers second and first W40 and later proved the class of the field in the 3000m.

In the race of the day, Tim Shiels of City of Derry won the M35 800m, just holding off Clonliffe’s Mounir Bouziane, with  Ronan Kearns of Rathfarnham finishing third. Fastest 60m time came from Ratoath’s Peter Doherty who won the M40 title in 7.54 secs. Michaela Marnell of Blackrock AC  made it a W35 60m and 200m double, beating Elaine Cronin of Gneeveguilla in both races.

In the 200m, Kevin Cogley of Menapians powered around the track to win the M35 title with a time of 23.03 secs.

Winner of the M35 400m in 52.71 secs was Brian Forbes of Mid-Ulster, with Karen Crean of St Brigid’s the fastest of the women with a time of 67.02 secs. Oldest competiros wre M85 Hugh Gallagher in competed in a number of events and England-based Dorothy McClennan who ran the  W75 60m.

Making it a middle distance double was Martin McDonald of Ballyroan/Abbeyleix won won the M55 1500 and 3000m.

* Good turn out at Athletics Northern Ireland Inter and masters men and women’s cross-country and  men’s junior 10km cross in Lurgan. Results below.

* Just a week after Donore’s Barbara Cleary became the first woman to win an Irish Parkrun, Aoife Talty of Raheny repeated the feat at St Anne’s Park, winning on Saturday in a great time of 17 mins 03 secs. At Marlay, another Raheny member, Kate Cronin was third overall  and first woman (Barry Minnock was the winner), while in Griffeen Park, Sharon Phelan – yes, from Raheny! – was first woman.  Raheny’s Feidhlim Kerry was the winner at Malahide Castle. So over  the four Dublin Parkruns, Raheny had four wins; two overall, and two by women.
