Round-up: Christie and Cullen win Raheny 5; Records for Doherty, Lavin at AIT

LIN_8285Mark Christie of Mullingar Harriers was an emphatic winner of the 30th AXA Raheny 5 this afternoon, clocking a time of 23 mins 57 secs, despite the windy conditions.  For second place, Michael Mulhare of Portlaoise  just held off the fast finishing Mick Clohisey of host club Raheny Shamrock. Their times were 24.06 and 24.07.

Mary Cullen of Sligo AC made a welcome return to racing when she successfully defended the women’s title she won last year,  with her brilliant time of 25 mins 35 secs knocking 20 seconds off the  course record she set last year. Catherina McKiernan  was second and first W40 in 27.53 , with national novice champion Michelle McGee of Brothers Pearse a close third in 27.57.  Host club Raheny Shamsock made it a senior team double, with Donore first of the master men and Tallaght best of the master women. A record total of 2,600 had signed up for the race  with 2,285 finishers.

* Tallaght sprinter Keith Doherty set a new Irish junior indoor record of 6.88secs when winning the 60m at the Woodie’s DIY National Junior and U23 Indoors in Athlone.  Finishing second was his Tallaght team mate Joseph Ojewumi in 6.95,  with St LOT’s Marcus Lawlor, who had set the previous record last year, in third place. Megan Marrs of City of Lisburn won the junior women’s 60m in 7.68 secs, and also won the 60m hurdles.

Winning the junior 800m was Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD, whose time of 2 mins 6.29 secs was a second off the Irish junior record of 2:05.26 she set last year. Multi-eventer Elizabeth Morland from Dunshaughlin won the long jump with 5.82, beating Mid-Sutton’s Sarah McCarthy who jumped 5.72.

In the junior men’s high jump, a leap of 2.10m  gave victory to Jaime Murtagh of Ashbourne.

UCD’s Sarah Lavin improved on her own U23 60m hurdles record when she won the title in 8.33 secs- .o3 secs faster than last year. A technical glitch meant there were no times for the women’s U23 60m, won by Bandon’s Phil Healy with  Lavin second. Ferrybank’s Thomas Barr was a clear winner of the U23 400m in 47.17.

* Tomas Fitzpatrick of Tallaght scored a memorable victory over Ratharnham’s Sean Hehir at the John Treacy Dungarvan 10-Mile. Despite the sleet, winds and rain,  both men broke 50 minutes, with Fitzpatrick finishing in 49 mins 48 secs and Hehir eleven seconds adrift. Making a comeback and finishing fourth was Tallaght’s Sean Connolly, who has been teaching in the UK for the past few years.  Another familiar face who hasn’t been seen on the roads for some time was Gary Murray of St Malachy’s who was 7th – and inside 51 minutes. This was a quality race.

Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane was first woman in 56 mins 53 secs with Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers second in 57.27 and Jill Hodgins third in 58.36. Maria McCambridge started the race but was forced to drop out at three miles. A total of 1,592 completed the race.

* In the Canaries,  Eoin Flynn of Rathfarnham WSAF won the Gran Canaria Maraton in Las Palmas in 2 hrs 29 mins.  Over 6,000 ran in gorgeous conditions. Eoin is now aiming for a low 2:20 time at Rotterdam.
