A record turnout of over a thousand young athletes in 206 teams from 55 schools turned out for the West Leinster Schools’ Cross-Country Championships in the Phoenix Park.

Biggest race of the day was the minor boys, with 225 taking part. They were led home by Cian May of Salesians Celbridge, who finished fourth at the DCU Invitational last week.  Leading home the 138 minor girls was Molly Brown of Castleknock Community College who, a day earlier, had won her category at the Leinster Schools Orienteering League in Malahide Castle.

Pierre Murchan of St Declan’s, CBS was a clear winner of the boy’s senior race, with Belvedere, led by Luke Gilligan taking the team medals. Winner of the girls’ inter title was Carla Sweeney  of St Mac Dara’s who tucked in behind early leader Eimear Fitzpatrick of Our Lady’s Terenure and, with the wind at her back,  made her break in the later stages of the race.
