Round-Up: Travers, Britton Win Patrick’s Festival 5km

IMG_4544Donore’s John Travers led home over 1,500 finishers in the  Patrick’s Festival 5km, held over a slightly changed route from St Stephen’s Green in Dublin.  Travers was a comfortable winner in 14 mins 7 secs, with Clonliffe’s Colm Rooney 16 seconds adrift for second place. In the women’s race, Fionnuala Britton of Sli Cualann finished 12th overall in 15 mins 33 secs. Catherina McKiernan was first W40 and second woman in 15:58, with Anne-Marie McGlynn of Lifford a close third. Running a superb time of 18.26 was Leevale’s Carmel Parnell, who was first over 5  and second master behind McKiernan.

* At the Jimmy’s 10k in Downpatrick, Joe McAllister of St Malachy’s came home first in 31 mins 17 secs, just beating Eddie McGinley of Annadale, who finished in 31 mins 23 secs. First woman was Gladys Ganiel O’Neill of North Belfast Harriers in 36 mins 46 secs. There were 664 finishers.

LEEVALE won both the men’s and the women’s competitions at the Woodie’s DIY National Indoor League final in Athlone

Leevale’s men beat St Abban’s and Raheny Shamrock AC thanks to key wins for David Quilligan  200m and long jump, Sam Healy high jump and Ben Thistlewood 1500m.

Much closer was the women’s  competition, where Leevale beat Craughwell by a single point.  Craughwell picked up valuable points from Caithriona Farrell in the high jump and long jump and Sarah Finnegan in the triple jump. For Leevale, there were critical wins for Louise Shanahan in the 800m and Claire McSweeney in the 1500m. Helping St Abban’s to third place was Nessa Millett,  first 60m hurdles and 400m and second long jump. Full results www.athletics.ireland.ie 

A LARGE CONTINGENT  of Irish athletes are training and racing in Portugal this week. Among them are Tomas Fitzpatrick  who clocked a time of 66 mins 21 secs  for 22nd place at the Lisbon Half Marathon, held in very hot conditions and dominated by African runners. Maria McCambridge  finished in 78 mins  16 secs and Brian McMahon in around 71 mins exactly. At the second day of the the Winter Throws Meet  in Leiria, Claire Fitzgerald threw 46.90 in the women’s discus, and

ROBERT HEFFERNAN  of Togher finished fifth in the 20km at the Lugano Race Walking Grand Prix in Switzerland, with a tiem of 1 hr 20 mins 57 secs. Brendan Boyce of Letterkenny  was 25th in 1:26.33 Luke Hickey of Leevale 31st in 1:28 – a personal best – and  Shercock’s James Traynor 49th in 1:31.02  also a PB.

IN TRALEE, Gary O’Hanlon won the marathon  by a full twelve minutes in 2 hrs 26 mins 52. Ann Marie Holland  was first woman in 2:55.22.  David Mansfield (to the great delight of his coach Sergiu Ciobanu) knocked a big chunk off his PB to win the half marathon in 73 mins 38 secs. National masters cross-country champion Maria McCarthy  of Farranfore was first woman and eighth overall in 82:09.
