Round-Up: Euro 1500m Qualifier for Robinson; Results from Winter Throws

Paul Robinson of St Coca’s finished third in the 1500m at the  Sydney Track Classic in a time of  3:39.03  – inside the qualifying mark for the European Championships later this year in Zurich.

In the women’s 800m, Laura Crowe of Riocht recorded a time of 2:03.16 when finished seventh, while in the triple jump, Denis Finnegan jumped 15.10m at his first attempt  and was over 15 metres  in the fourth and sixth rounds. Great Britain’s Philips Idowu, who had only two legal jumps,  did enough to win  the event comfortably with a  leap of 16.57m.

Newly minted Irishman Liam Zamel-Paez won the high jump with 2.20m. The former Aussie champion, who has signed up with Clonliffe, has a PB of 2.29 and is chasing the Euro qualification mark of 2.26.

At the British Masters Cross-Country in Glasgow,  Lagan Valley’s Ruth Magill was first W50, NBH’s Paul Elliott 3rd M60; the Northern Ireland M55 team  (Newberry, Johnston, Elliott)  also third.

* At the Winter Throws Meet in Leiria, Portugal, Irish women’s javelin record holder Anita Fitzgibbon opened her season with a throw of 42.16m. Her sequence was 41.35, X,3949, 38.70, X, 42.16.  Linda Stahl of Germany threw 61.20 to win the competition.  In the women’s shot, Claire Fitzgerald threw 14.29, with four of her six efforts over 14 metres (13.60, 13.83, 14.19, 14.04, 14.29, 14.13). In the men’s U23 discus, Marco Pons  threw 48.61 in the sixth and final round. His only other legal throw  – 46.63m – came in the opening round.

* Patrick Roche of Naas Tri Club led home 145 finishers at the inaugural Naas Parkrun. Catherine Kelly was first woman. Fastest runs of the day came from Raheny veteran Mick Traynor 16.07  and Deirdre Byrne 18.23, both in St Anne’s Park.

* Niall Shiel of St Killian’s won the St LOT Run 4 Life 5km with a time of 15 mins 59 secs. Jackie Carthy of Kilmore was first woman in 18.19. Pat Byrne and Paula Grant won the 10km.
