Round-Up: McCormack 2nd in Spain

IMG_9823Kilcoole’s Fionnuala McCormack finished second at the Cross of the Constitution in Spain,running a time of 29 mins 17 secs  for the 7.9km course. Race winner was  the Kenyan Linet Masai; Spain’s Trihas Gebre  finished 35 seconds behind McCormack for third place. That’s good news for the Irish team with the European Cross-Country in France just a fortnight away.

In England, defending European cross-country champion Gemma Steel won the UK trial race for a third successive year.  She was pushed hard by Kate Avery who finished second; Steph Twell was third. Winner of the men’s trial was  Ross Millington.

ANNE MARIE  MCGLYNN of Letterkenny, who was forced out of last week’s Irish trial race when she lost a spike,  was first women at the Seely Cup 10km held in Ormeau Park. McGlynn and Kerry Harty of Newcastle  were locked together for much of the race, with only eleven seconds separating them at the finish. McGlynn finished in 34 mins 16 secs.  Gary Murray  of St Malachy’s finished first of the men in 31 mins o6 secs. North Belfast made it a team double.

In Tymon Park, Donore was first of the women’s teams at the Dublin Intermediate Cross-Country, with Karla Doran winning the race and Kim Hickey third. Neil O’Rourke of Civil Service Harriers won the men’s race from Tom Sherlock of Clonliffe, with Pablo Sanchez in third place leading Crusaders to team victory.

Host club Fingallians had a good day out  at the opening round of the women’s Meet and Train Cross-Country 2-Mile League in Swords. Aisling Carroll won the race with Cindy Hickey third.   Also out in force were Clonliffe, Trim C and Crusaders. Next round is on January 3.

BRIAN FUREY beat Paul Tierney to win the long 26km race at the Run the Line Trail Run in Aid of Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue  held in and around Three Rock Mountain. Lucy O’Mallye was first woman. Brian Flanelly and Kate Purcell won the shorter 13km race.
