Lizzie Lee of Leevale, running to make the qualifying time for the World Half Marathon, missed out on the course record at the Enniscorthy 10k by just eight seconds. Lee’s time of 33 minutes exactly was still a massive PB and saw her finish 5th overall. Lee was on target for Linda Byrne’s time of 32 mins 53 secs when a hit by drenching sleet with less than a mile to go. Winner of the race was international mountain runner Killian Mooney of DSD, aged just 20, whose time of 30 mins 56 secs was also a huge PB.
Winning the senior races at a poorly-supported Glo Health National Intercounties in Tuam were Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham WSAF and Riocht’s Shona Heaslip. Eimear Fitzpatrick of DSD won the junior girls race; Darren Ryan of Lusk came home first of the junior men. Have we seen the last of a separate intercounty championships?
On the US indoor circuit, John Travers ran a personal best 7:55.05 to finish 2nd in the 3000m at Boston; Travers blitzed the final 200m in 28 secs. Hugh Armstrong ran 8:16. Also in action was Zak Irwin who ran the 400m. Ciara Mageean of UCD failed to finish in the women’s 3000m; she and Travers now compete at the Millrose Games in New York. At the Iowa State Classic Clonmel’s Seán Tobin ran 7:58.75 to finish ninth in the 3000m On the roads,Claire Gibbons-McCarthy ran a personal best 75 mins 18 secs at the Barcelona half-marathon.
