Round-Up: 200m record for Lawler at University Indoors. McMullen jumps 7.83m. O’Hanlon wins 50k title

A 200m record for Marcus Lawler representing IT Carlow was just one highlight of a packed day of athletics at the Irish Universities Indoors in Athlone.  Lawler won the 200m in 21.03 secs, with 400m hurdler Thomas Barr of UL  second in 21.47 secs. Other records fell in the 60m hrudles won by Antonia Garcia Fernandez of DCU in 8.13 secs, with Matt Behan, also DCU fractionally behind in 8.14 secs; the combined events (four disciplines) won by Michael Bowler with a total of 3835; and the 4×200 won by a UL squad that included Barr.

There were two women’s records  – a 54.66  secs for Jemma Bromell of  UL in the 400m, where 400m hurdler Christine McMahon was second in 54.87 secs and the triple jump with a 12.68m leap for DCU’s Sarah Buggy. Closest competition of the day was the women’s shot with four women over 12 metres; Alana Fratteroli of UL was the winner with a best of 12.38m. Winning both the 800m and the 1500m was Rio-bound steeplechaser Michelle Finn of UL.

PICK OF THE IRISH performances at the IFAN Indoor meeting in Ghent  was  a long jump victory for Adam McMullen with a personal best 7.83 m. Sarah Lavin of UCD finished fifth in the 60m hurdles in 8.29 secs; Rose Ann Galligan was fifth in the 1500m in 4:1728, with Sara Treacy running 4:32.55

CLONLIFFE’S Gary O’Hanlon was the winner of the Donadea 50k. His time of 2 hrs 56 mins 51 secs put him 15 minutes clear of he chasers.Suzanne Kenny was first woman in 3:59.49.
