Mark English set a new Irish record of 60.93 secs for the rarely-run 500m distance at the Globen Galen in Stockholm. English won the race ahead of USA’s Erik Sowinski who finished in 61.72 secs. English, who will take part in an 800m race in Glasgow on Saturday, already holds the Irish junior outdoor and indoor 800m records as well as the Irish senior indoor 800m record and the Irish 600m record.

Highlight of the Athlone Indoor International was a World Indoors qualifying time for Rose-Anne Galligan of Newbridge in the 1500m. Galligan’s time of 4:11.07  saw her finish third in the race.  Just off the World Indoors mark was Amy Foster who finished third in the 60m in 7.33 secs –  7.32 secs is what she needs.

Quote of the day comes from Rose-Anne: “I thought the world was going to end last night when I got to the track and realised I forgot my pink bow in my hair!! Turns out superstition is rubbish and I can run fast without it!! So pleased to run a 1500m PB 4:11.07 and to qualify for World Championships next month.. It’s always nice to do it on home soil!”

In the 400m, Brian Gregan  was second in 47.62 seconds, while in the 60m hurdles, UCD’s Sarah Lavin continued her recovery from injury by finishing fifth in 8.25 secs, a time that equals her previous best. Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard made a brave attempt to break the four minute barrier in the mile but faded to finish fourth in 4:03.15. Race winner Dawit Wolde of Ethiopia set an Irish All-Comers’ record of 3:54.02.
