Mullingar ‘s Mark Christie just piped Freddy Sittuk for victory in the New Ireland Rathfarnham 5k, with both men given a time of 14 mins 26 secs – off the course record of 13 mins 53 secs. Third was Kilkenny’s Brian Maher. With Kevin Dooney fourth and Donal Foley 24th, Raheny finished first team ahead of host club Rathfarnham WSAF.
First woman in 16 mins 30 secs was DSD’s Laura Shaughnessy, with Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane second. Caroline Crowley in third place was leading Crusaders to team victory for a second year.
CLAIRE McCARTHY of Leevale finished first W40 at the Berlin Marathon today with a time of 2 hrs 38 mins. Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers was not too far behind finishing second W35 in 2:39.10. Paul Moran, running in the M50 age group, clocked a time of 2:44.47 for 13th place; in the same age group, Ronan Boland of Eagle ran 2:45.43 amd Dunleer’s David Carrie 2:56.19. Winner in this age group was former Spanish international athlete Martin Fiz in 2:26.32.
