Roads Round-Up: Raheny Raiders Dominate Tinryland ‘4’

"Lazarus Rising"

“Lazarus Running”

Raheny raiders dominated the annual Rockford Roof Tiles 4-Mile just outside Carlow with Freddy Keron Sittuk and Daire Bermingham the top two men and Maria O’Sullivan and Patrycja Wlodarczyk the first two women. There was an exceptional performance from Sli Cualann’s Mick  Byrne who finished 10th overall and first master – not bad for a 50 something  who suffered a massive heart attack two years ago.  Not too far behind was local athlete Tommy Payne who was fourth master and first M55.

CLONLIFFE’S Gary O’Hanlon won the Tullamore Quinlan Cup Half Marathon in 69 mins 18 secs. A distant second was Riocht’s James Doran in 72.29. First woman was local woman Pauline Curley in 79.12 – just a week after winning the Longford Marathon. Mayo’s Norah Newcombe was a minute behind for second.

OUR PICTURE SHOWS Irish ultra running pioneer Tom McGrath into the sixth hour of his 24-hour charity run at Santry. Thirty years ago, McGrath, who lives in New York where he owns an Irish pub, won the first ever 24-horu race run in this country at Tullamore running 126 miles. An ex-GAA footballer, he had turned to running after a long battle with alcoholism, and his struggle is currently being turned into a documentary film called “Lazarus Running”; the finale will show him running on to the Croke Park pitch at half time during the Dublin-Donegal semi-final tomorrow. Among those running with Tom in Santry were his niece Donna, his brother Ciaran (chief minder), and ultra runners John O’Regan and Dave Brady – after he completed his 413th marathon in Tullamore !  Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com.
