Round-Up: Ciobanu wins ultra-tough Clonakilty ‘Half’. Indoor records for Mageean and Buttner

Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe, who is second on the list of qualifiers for the marathon at the Rio Olympics, was a comfortable winner of the Clonakilty Half Marathon in 75 mins 28 secs  – not a bad time for what I’m reliably informed is the toughest half marathon in the country on roads. His Clonliffe team mate Gary O’Hanlon won the marathon in 2:48.15.

ANNA SADOWSKA  and Patrick Roche were the winners of the Garda BHAA Cross-Country races in the Phoenix Park, with over 500 turning out. Is this a record?

CIARA MAGEEAN of UCD ran a brilliant new Irish indoor record of 4:08.66 to finish third in in a blanket finish 1500m at an indoor meet in Karlsruhe, Germany.  Winner was Axumawit Embaye of Ethiopia in 4:08.22. At the Armory Meet in New York, John Travers of Donore ran 4 mins 2 .47 for 8th in the mile. John Coghlan of MSB was 8th in the 3000m in 8:16.78 and Sara Treacy of Dunboyne 11th in the women’s 3000m in 9:26.88secs for the mile.  At Staten Island, Siofra Cleirigh Buttner ran 2:03.74 for 800m –  a new Irish U23 record, breaking Ciara Everard’s 2012 time of 2:05.76.

Earlier in the week, Mark English of UCD  finished second in an 800m in Dusseldorf. His time of 1:47.28 put him marginally behind Mussaeb Balla who ran 1:46.79; Balla is a Sudanese-born athlete running in Qatari colours.
