Round-Up: National 10km, K Club 10km, Intervarsities.

Fionnuala Britton successfully defended her national 10km title when she finished second in the  race, run in conjunction with the Spar Great Ireland Run in  Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Britton finished second behind the 2012 winner Gemma Steel  in a persoIMG_2953nal best time of 33 mins 7 secs for the  hilly course. Second of the Irish was Leevale’s Lizzie Lee, fourth overall in  34 mins 18 secs, third was Newcastle’s Kerry O’Flaherty in 35 mins 27 secs and fourth Sarah Mulligan in 35:39; she finished just ahead of her DSD team mate Ava Hutchinson, racing again after a long lay-off.

In the men’s race, Mark Christie of  Mullingar Harriers won the men’s national title in 30 mins 10 secs, followed by Clonliffe pair Sergiu Ciobanu in 30:30 and Brandon Hargreaves. Rathfarnham  WSAF with eight finishers in the top fifty look to have won the men’s team category; not sure who finished second, but North Belfast Harriers are pretty confident that they took the bronze.

In the mile, a rueful Mark English dropped out; as he admitted afterwards, his legs gave up on him after he passed his favoured  800m distance.

A FEW MILES AWAY on the quiet roads around Straffan,  over 400 ran the annual K Club BHAA 10km – one of the most popular races on the BHAA calendar, with a huge spread of food after and lots of chat. Winners were Eoin Callaghan and  Charlotte Kearney.

STAR TURN AT THE Irish University Championships in Belfast came from Thomas Barr  of UL  who won the 400m hurdles in 50.44 secs – inside the 50.60 secs he needed for the World University Games next July.  Abroad, Phil Healy of Bandon ran 11.74 secs for 100m at a meet in Jacksonville Florida, which qualifies her for the European U23 Championships also in July.

ATHLETES from Project Africa made it a double at the Dental Solutions 5km in Derry on Friday evening. Vincent Kiprotich was a comfortable winner of the men’s race in 14 mins 46 secs, while Selina Kangogo, winner of the Omagh  Half Marathon, was first of the women in 17:32.
