Round-Up: Proper Just Off Record At Tullamore

Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper  was only 24 points off her own national record when winning the  heptathlon at the Woodie’s DIY Combined Events Championships in Tullamore – her fourth outdoor title this  season.

Proper had started the day day with a commanding lead  after her first day’s efforts: 14.31  in the 100m hurdles (935 points), 1.61 high jump (747), 10.33 shot (551) and 24.0 200m (981) for a total of 3214.  On day 2,  she started with an excellent  6.26 in the long jump (930), then threw 32.01 in the javelin (515) and completed her competition with a 2:24.80 in the 800m (759), giving her a grand total of 5418 points.  In the battle for second place, Laura Frey of Lagan Valley on 3712 points edged it from Raheny’s Helen Buckley on 3669.

Strong performances in the hurdles, high jump and 200m gave Vivian Fleischer of Celbridge victory in the junior women’s heptathlon over Bohermeen’s Karen Dunne and Catriona Twomey of KCH.

Winning his first ever outdoor national title in the decathlon was former 400/800m international David McCarthy of Le Cheile. He picked up his biggest points in the 100m with his time of 11.27 worth 801;  the 400m (51.21/ 805) and the 1500m (4:34.20/717). He scored over 500 points in the shot, high jump and hurdles, with the discus, pole vault and javelin proving his weakest events. His total of 5644 put him comfortably clear of Raheny’s Sean Gill on 4605. With big points for the hurdles and high jump, Shane Aston of Trim  was a clear winner of the junior men’s heptathlon, going one better than last year.

In the youth’s octathlon, Christian Robinson of  City of Lisburn set a new record of 5291 with his final 1000m run proving the clincher. Mark Rogers of  St Peter’s, first home in the  1,000m, also  improved on his previous best with a total of 5221. Amy McTeggart of Boyne comfortably won the girls’ septathlon title, with her best points coming in the high jump.

* Clonliffe’s Mark Kenneally ran a brilliant time of 23 mins 47 secs to win the Streets of Galway 8k last Satruday. A distance second was Kenyan visitor Freddy Keron Sittuk in 24 mins 9 secs. Neil Tipton, an English visitor from Tipton Harriers was a close thrid in 24 mins 13 sec. Borrisokane’s Siobhan O’Doherty, the women’s mini marathon winner, continued her successful summer by finishing first woman in 26 mins 49 secs, followed by Leevale’s Michelle Finn and Breege Connolly of North Belfast Harriers.

* Philip Harty of West Waterford set a new course  record of 24.30 at Friday’s  An Tobar Ardmore 5-Mile – the final race in this year’s Ger Wyley SKINS Summer Series. Leevale’s Nollaig O’Neill was first woman  in 30:40.
