At the Penn Relays, Sarah Collins, running for Providence College, won the women’s 10,000m in 34:03.07 while Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD anchored Villanova to victory in the 4x1500m.
Cleirigh Buttner got the baton in fourth place but blitzed around the track in a 4 mins 21.7 secs to give Villanova a narrow win over Oregon in 17:44.29. Only last week, Cleirigh Buttner had run a time of 2:03.52 for 800m. Villanova later finished third in the distance medley relay with Cleirigh Buttner leading them off with a time of 3:22.14 for the 1000m leg. Harry Purcell of Trim AC was running the 400m for the Villanova men’s team in the DMR; he clocked a time of 47.92 secs. The team finished fifth.
Update: News of a stunning 10,000 debut by Clonliffe’s Aaron Hanlon at the Penn Relays. Running for Providence, Hanlon ran 30 mins 05 secs, with 5,000 splits of 15.03/15.02.
Other good results Stateside include a 53.17 sec 400m time for Claire Mooney from Naas, a student at St John’s University, in Atlanta. At the Penn Relays, Mooney ran 53.73 for her leg in the 4 x 400m. At the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Sli Cualann’s Tara Jameson running for Iona College clocked an impressive time of 33:38.5 for the 10,000m, while Clonmel athlete Sean Tobin, running for Ole Mississippi, ran 3:42.1 for 1500m.
A number of Irish athletes are competing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia this weekend, while on Sunday, Mary Cullen of North Sligo will chase the Olympic qualification mark of 32 mins 15 secs in the 10,000m at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, California.
