Joe Warne had a good win over Star of the Sea’s Eoin Callaghan in the Le Cheile 5km in Leixlip, with Lee van Haeften of Donore third and John Downes, also Donore, 11th overall and first master. Best of the women was Dunboyne veteran Karen O’Hanlon. The race attracted a healthy turn-out of over 300 hundred, most of them club runners.
* A stunning 508 completed this morning’s Parkrun 5km in Malahide Demesne – just five off the record of 513 set last week. First home was the veteran David Byrne in 16 mins 27 scs; first woman was Kate O’Neill of MSB in 17:53. A further 349 ran in Marlay Park.
Some interesting statistics from Malahide: Raheny Shamrock with 305 runs completed by its 63 Parkrunners in the 26 runs to date is the biggest supporter of the event. A very close second is Portmarnock Runners – their 63 Parkrunners have 252 runs completed. Fingal Tri Club with 36 Parkrunners and 114 runs is third on the list. Next Parkrun venue will be Griffeen Park Lucan from June 15.
* Shot putter Fiona Tuite (Fingallians) and 1500m runner Nadia Power (Templeogue) made the qualifying marks for the European Youth Olympics at last Wednesday’s opening rround of the Dublin Graded League. Race of the day was the men’s 3000m, with Andrew Connick from Waterford opening up a good gap early out but caught by Emmett Jennings (DSD) with 700m to go. Connick wasn’t prepared to give up and won the sprint for the line in 8:33.6 with Jennings second in 8:34.5. Next Graded Meet ins on Wednesday May 15 in Santry and includes a 10,000m.
