O’Doherty Digs Deep for Mini Marathon Victory. Harty wins Cork Marathon. Plus results.

IMG_3299After  finishing first in 2013, Siobhán O’Doherty  of Borrisokane AC in Co Tipperary took a second victory in the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon held in Dublin today for the 34th time.

Victory didn’t come easy, with O’Doherty and Letterkenny’s Natasha Adams locked together at the halfway point  on the Stillorgan road. In the end, there was just three seconds in it, with O’Doherty crossing the line in 34 mins and 30 secs followed by Adams in 34.33. O’Doherty  is a women’s mini marathon regular  – she was runner-up in the race in 2011 and 2012, winner in 2013, and then seventh in 2014 and fourth in 2015.

Sarah Mulligan of host club Dundrum South Dublin was third in 35.28, followed by Orla Drumm of Crusaders and last year’s winner Maria McCambridge of DSD who was wearing No 1. Finishing in sixth place was Olivia Clinton of DSD;  Ciara Hickey of Bros Pearse was seventh in 37 mins 3 secs.

Another former winner  in action was Annette Kealy of Raheny Shamrock, while traveling from Cork to take part was world W60 masters’ 10,000m  champion Carmel Parnell of  Leevale. To judge from the singlets, Carmel was just one of thousands from clubs all over the country for whom a trip to Dublin for the mini marathon remains an annual pilgrimage. Among them was a large group from Carrick Aces led by former international athlete Rose Lambe who was first W55 in last year’s mini marathon; first home for the Aces was Anne Linden who broke 40 minutes. A technical glitch meant the race start was delayed by ten minutes.

PHILIP HARTY of West Waterford won the Cork City Marathon in a time of  2 hrs 32 mins 58 secs this morning. First woman was Leevale’s Nollaig O’Neill who was defending the title she won last year and finished in 3:00:40. Peter Somba won the half marathon beating Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe, who  was going for a third consecutive victory in the race. Aoife Cooke of Youghal AC won the women’s race; Mary Sweeney, her aunt and coach, was sixth woman and first W55 in the full marathon. Unfortunately the course proved longer than expected by almost half a mile after the motorbike outriders leading the race took the wrong route.
