Nat T-F Day 2: O Lionaird, Mageean win 1500m titles. With Results Summary

IMG_1180Leevale’s Ciaran O Lionaird booked his place on the Irish team for the European Athletics Championships when he won a thrilling 1500m at the second day of the Glo Health Irish Track and Field Championships in Santry.

Four men have A qualifying standards for the 1500m at the Europeans and they duly finished in the top four places. Paul Robinson of St Coca’s led the race from midway but with 100m to go, O Lionaird began chasing him hard. He did enough to win the race in 3 mins 43.85 secs with Robinson second in 3:44.16. Winning an equally close battle for third place was John Travers of Donore. He finished in 3:45.00, followed by David McCarthy of West Waterford 3:45.65 and Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard 3:45.65.

The women’s 1500m provided the pleasant surprise of the day when Ciara Mageean  of UCD, who has spent two agonising years dealing with a career threatening injury, came home first in 4:15.35. After a major operation exactly a year ago, Mageean started back training in March and this was her first race since then.

Fionnuala Britton  of Kilcoole was second in 4:18.33 was second, with Kerry O’Flaherty of Newcastle a close third in 4:18.77. O’Flaherty was using the race as a fitness tester before the steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games in exactly ten days times. Finishing fourth was the evergreen Maria McCambridge in 4:22.36, with Ann Marie McGlynn of Lifford fifth in 4:24.28.

Over the shorter distances, there was a dead heat – the second of the weekend – in the women’s 100m between Amy Foster of Lisburn and Bandon’s Phil Healy, both credited with a time of 11.49 secs which was a PB for Healy. Kelly Proper of Ferrybank was third in 11.62. Just seven of the 10 finalists ran in the men’s 100m, with three disqualified for false starting, among them pre-race favourite David Hynes IMG_1067of Menapians. He was left to watch as a stunned Jamie Davis of Raheny took the gold medal. He was timed at 10.90 second as was second placed Enna Madden of Carrick-on-Shannon.

In the women’s 400m, both Mandy Gault of Lagan Valley and DSD’s Sinead Denny were timed at 54.24 secs, but  Gault was given the win.  In the men’s 400m, Brian Gregan of Clonliffe stormed away from the field to win in 46.56 secs.

Over 800m, Mark English of UCD was a comfortable winner of  the men’s race in 1:49.91, while in the women’s race, QUB’s Katie Kirk underlined her immense potential when she beat Rose Ann Galligan of Newbridge to win in 2:09.01.

Hurdling is on a high in this country at the women and Thomas Barr consolidated his reputation when he won the men’s 400m hurdles, though his time of 50.04secs was slightly slow by his recent high standards. Christine McMahon  was a clear winner of the women’s race in 57.73 secs, while Sarah Lavin raced away with the women’s 100m hurdles winning in 13.48 secs. In the absence of Ben Reynolds, Gerard O’Donnell  won the men’s 110m hurdles in 15.57 secs.

In the field, Tralee’s Claire Fitzgerald added the shot title to her discus win of a day earlier, while Colin Quirke of of Crusaders won the men’s discus with a throw of 52.73m beating Marco Pons on 51.23.  Conor McCullough of Crusaders won the hammer with a throw of 72.81 – the best field result of the competition.
