Sarah McCormack

Sarah McCormack of Clonliffe Harriers finished best of the Irish at the 30th World Mountain Running Championships in Italy when she finished 15th in the women’s uphill only 8.4km race in a time of 51 mins 13 secs. Less than a minute behind was Sarah Mulligan of DSD in 20th place with a time of 52:07. With MSB’s Emma Donlon – who came in for Michelle McGee – in 62nd place, the team finished ninth.  Last year, McCormack had finished sixth and the team third on an up-and-down course in Poland.

Austrian mountain running legend Andrea Mayr was a clear winner of the race for a record fifth time. Her time of 45.02 put her over two minutes clear of the chasers led by Lucy Wamboi Murigi of Kenya the only African in the women’s race.

In the men’s senior 11.7km race, Clonliffe’s Brian McMahon 55th and Ian Conroy of Raheny 58th were separated by less than half a minute.  Just like last year in Poland, Uganda took the first three places with Isaac Kiprop the winner; none of last year’s Ugandan team ran.  Winning the junior men’s 8.4km was Uganda’s Philip Kipyeko,  with Ireland’s Killian Mooney 53rd.

MARK ENGLISH of UCD finished fourth in the 800m  at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco. English finished strongly in 1:45.74, less than a second behind  race winner Nigel Amos of Botswana who ran  1:44.88

IN NEW YORK, UCD’s Ciara Mageean finished third in the 5th Avenue Mile in 4 mins 21 secs. Winner was USA’s Jenny Simpson in 4:19.

ON THE ROADS, Freddy Keron Sittuk and Gladys Ganiel O’Neill were the winners of the Deep River Rock Belfast Half Marathon, while Gary Murry and Anne Marie McGlynn won the Waterside Half Marathon in Derry.  In Cork, Mark Hanrahan and Orla Drumm won the John Buckley Cork 10-Mile.

RUNNERS FROM from France, Belgium and Canada as well as Ireland lined out for the annual Clifden Lifeboat 10km. Galway’s Richard Farnan, the 2012 winner, forced the pace from the start and came home the winner in 36:20 well ahead of local brothers Sean and Seamus Nee, who were leading the Connemara Angels to team victory for a fifth year. First woman was Lorraine O’Connell  in 45:57, followed by Olivia Staunton and Chamberlayne Champayne.
