Tragedy Hits Dublin ‘Half’

Tragedy struck in the Phoenix Park when a male runner collapsed and died about 11 miles into the Airtricity Dublin Half Marathon. Sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Others also suffered badly in the unexpectedly warm weather. Big thanks not only to the hard-pressed St John’s Ambulance crews but also to those runners who abandoned their own races to help out fellow runners who were clearly in trouble.

* Maria McCambridge of DSD and the Marathon Mission was first woman in the race, finishing 20th overall in 76 mins 45 secs. That makes it four wins from four in the Airtricity Dublin Race Series – a series that helps finance the Marathon Mission.

Coming home first overall was Dunshaughlin’s Robbie Matthews in 68 mins 20 secs. Mark Hoey of Star of the Sea was second in 69 mins 07 secs and Clonliffe’s Brian McMahon third in 71:53.

* Siobhan O’Doherty did it earlier this year and now Jean Wilson of Sportsworld has joined the exclusive club of women who have won a race outright. Jean beat 112 others  to win the Donadea 5km in 118 mins 19 secs.
